Shop With A Cop Program

The Villa Rica Police Department began its Shop with a Cop program in December of 2000. We started by helping 15 kids that first year. From 2001 to 2005 we averaged 25 kids per year. The program has grown to where we were able to help 35 kids in 2006 and 62 kids in 2007. Since the start of this program we have been able to help 237 kids have a better Christmas. For some of these kids it was the only Christmas they received. This is only possible with the help of private and corporate sponsors. If you or someone you know would like to help you can contact Major Toney Johnson or any member of the Villa Rica Police Department.

The way the program works is the name of the kids are turned into the police department through the schools, DFACS and local churches. The Officers also contribute to the fund each year. The situation of each child is looked into by the department. If the child’s situation meets our criteria then the child’s name is placed on our list. One hundred percent of the money raised goes to the kids.

About a week before Christmas we meet the kids at Wal-Mart and they are given $100 dollars to spend on anything they want. We do have a few restrictions; they are not allowed to buy anything that contains violence or drugs. (Toy guns, DVD’s or CD’s that contain drugs or violence).
