The Villa Rica Police Department participates in the Special Olympics Torch Run every year to help raise money and awareness for Special Olympics. This will be our second year after raising over $1,000.00 last year. Our goal for 2008 is $5,000.00 and we will raise the money by selling t-shirts and hats along with several state sponsored events to occur in the months of March and April. We are asking the public’s support and ask that you keep a look out for our officers collecting money for Special Olympics. Special Olympics Georgia invests in people with intellectual disabilities, helping them to develop athletic skills, while also promoting the abilities of the athletes off the field. Athletes are taught that differences should not be divisive. They are encouraged to transfer their drive, determination, and enthusiasm for life beyond the playing field. Skills learned in our program facilitate success at school, at work, and in relationships with family and friends. In order to deliver our program to more than 23,000 athletes, we raise funds through a variety of special events. The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) is the largest fundraiser for Special Olympics Georgia and for Special Olympics programs throughout the world. It is a relay run that involves more than 1,000 Law Enforcement Officers. These individuals begin to raise money in January and continue until the run itself, which is held the two weeks leading up to Opening Ceremonies of Summer Games on May 30th. The Law Enforcement Torch Run carries the Special Olympics Torch, known as the “Flame of Hope”, throughout the state and culminates at the Opening Ceremony of Summer Games. The officers volunteer their time to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics Athletes.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is a unique partnership between Special Olympics Georgia and law enforcement agencies throughout the state. This is an opportunity for law enforcement to give back to their communities and to be seen in a positive light. The LETR receives a large amount of publicity, which is beneficial to all Law Enforcement Departments involved.
